The 2014 Formula One World Championship will be decided this weekend at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
In the end, Formula One didn’t need the bizarre artificial scenario of double points for the final race of the season as the battle between Mercedes duo Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg would have required a title decider under normal circumstances anyway.
With Hamilton holding a 17-point lead, even with 50 points available for the victor on Sunday, a final shoot-out victory would not be enough for Rosberg to overturn the margin if Hamilton finishes second and claims the 36 points available for second place this weekend.
Without double points Hamilton’s buffer would have been a sixth place finish, but at least the championship doesn’t look like it could be claimed under too controversial circumstances.
