Could Formula One pull the Russian Grand Prix from this seasons calendar?
After enjoying the Winter Olympics Sochi is currently gearing up for the inaugural Russian Grand Prix in October.
Sochi is Russia’s largest resort, with a population of around 400,000 on the coast of the Black Sea.
An awful lot of development has been going on in the region, with the Winter Olympics being hosted by Russia and the Football World Cup coming to the region in 2018.
The Formula One track has received $200 million worth of funding after they secured a contract to host a Formula One race every year between 2014 and 2020 in a reported $250million deal.
A 3.7-mile circuit layout of the track is being prepared for their first race in October.
But the tragic loss of the Malaysian Airlines flight over Ukraine with the loss of all 298 people on board has seen some question whether Formula One should travel to Russia.
The contract is closely tied to Russian President Vladimir Putin and some senior British MPs have called for the race to be cancelled.
However Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone is not adverse to dealing with political situations surrounding Grand Prix when it comes to trotting the globe and he has stated: ‘I don’t see any problems’ adding Formula One ‘doesn’t get involved in politics’.
