When Lewis Hamilton announced he was leaving McLaren for Mercedes it shocked Formula One.

At the time, McLaren were won of the most successful teams in the sport, whilst Mercedes were still a new force having entered as a manufacturer.

After three world titles in four years, the move, if it was ever to be questioned has now been emphatically answered.

Hamilton will be out-of-contract at the end of 2018, but there is no panic in the Mercedes camp regarding a new deal.

In seasons gone by, Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes appear to have held long protracted contract negotiations during various seasons.

But this time around, the four-time Formula One World Champion looks set to sign a new contract with Mercedes with few issues.

Hamilton was briefly linked with a potential switch to Ferrari, but Sebastian Vettel’s long-term deal with Ferrari appears to have scuppered any chance of that happening.

That leaves Lewis Hamilton with no other competitive options, other than remaining with Mercedes.

This doesn’t leave Hamilton with much room to manoeuvre in regards to negotiations, however it has previously been suggested that Hamilton could be in line to earn £120million if he agrees and signs a new three-year-contract.

But whilst Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff believes it is ‘just a matter of time’ before a new deal is signed, the vultures are reportedly circling, looking for an opportunity to feed off.

‘Lewis has history here, He is an unbelievable driver. There isn’t a team in the pit lane that would not be interested in having Lewis drive for them, us included.

‘If anyone got Lewis, it would be great for the team.’
McLaren team boss Zak Brown told Sky Sports.

If Hamilton was to swap Mercedes for McLaren then it would be even more shocking than when he made the move in the other direction!
