The Formula One teams and drivers have made their tyre selections for the German Grand Prix weekend.
The new three compound tyre regulations from Formula One and Pirelli have worked brilliantly this season.
The drivers and teams have to secretly make their selections weeks in advance and are then locked in with their selections, this has made for some interesting tyre strategies highlighted most recently at the Austrian Grand Prix.
In Hungary there wasn’t much variation between selections, making tyre strategy from similar across the board, Red Bull Racing threatened with a different strategy to Mercedes during the open laps but overall they weren’t really in the battle.
For Germany selections are quite similar to that of Hungary.
Every team with the exception of Force India have selected just one set of the white medium compound tyre.
The Force India drivers of Hulkenberg and Perez have then teamed that up with 4 sets of the yellow soft compound and 6 sets of the red super-soft rubber.
Mercedes, Red Bull Racing, Toro Rosso and Manor have all gone with 1 set of medium, 4 sets of softs and 8 sets of super-soft.
Williams, Renault and Haas have gone for 1 set of mediums, 5 sets of softs and 7 sets of super-softs.
Ferrari, Sauber and McLaren have gone for the most aggressive strategy, with 1 set of medium, 3 sets of softs and 9 sets of super-soft.
There was no inter-team variations on tyre selections.
The battle looks like it could come down to whether Ferrari’s additional 1 set of super-soft will give them an advantage over Red Bull Racing and will Force India’s selections of extra medium tyres be their wildcard?
