Ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso made it clear that he could quit Formula One next season.
The two-time Formula One World Champion hopes that McLaren Honda can challenge for the championship in 2017, his final year under contract with McLaren.
‘Every day you work imagining that victory will come in the future.
‘Next year we want to win the world championship – it may sound strange being where we are, but the goal is that. I take it as a process of maturation waiting for better times. Alonso told AS as quoted by Sky Sports.
But whilst his focus was very much still on McLaren returning to victorious ways, Alonso however also made a threat that he may quit the sport after 2017.
This was not due to McLaren Honda’s current lack of ability to compete, but if the Spaniard believes the sport is going in the wrong direction in regards regulations.
Alonso has regularly been critical of the current era in Formula One, one in which he sees that he cannot attack Grand Prix as the drivers have to look after the tyres, the engines and the fuel consumption.
In 2017 Formula One’s regulations have a bit of makeover in a bid to make the sport look more attractive, but if it doesn’t work, he will consider walking away.
He has reiterated that view this week in a new interview with Cadena Ser radio.
As quoted by motorsport.com he said: ‘I’ve always said the same for these past two years. I think today’s cars are less attractive,’
‘They give you a much more normal feeling, it’s not the same Formula 1 we used to know in the first 10 years that I was racing. Now you don’t have that ‘wow’ feeling, or think ‘I can’t believe how fast I was through that corner’, or ‘it’s incredible how fast this car is’.
‘You don’t have that now. It’s much more normal cars, more boring.
He continued: ‘Next year the cars will be faster, more physical, and I have the hope that that Formula 1 will be attractive for the driver again.
‘And if it’s still a Formula 1 about saving instead of attacking then I’ll think if I continue or not, but not because I’m thinking of retiring. There are other things that I want to do.’
If Alonso were to walk away form the sport he will most likely be looked upon as one of the most underachieving Formula One greats of the sport.
The Spaniard is, according to many, the best driver of his generation. But with just two Formula One titles coming in 2005 and 2006, his record does not reflect his talent.
