Could Formula One be set to return to Mexico?

Despite being included in the draft 2014 calendar, the Mexican Grand Prix was omitted from the final set schedule following a meeting by the FIA World Motor Sport Council back in December last year.

The Mexican Grand Prix organisers always had their work cut out to complete major upgrade works at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit.

That time frame appeared to be the major reason behind dropping it for 2014, but 12 months on it looks like Mexico is finally ready to return to the Formula One calendar.

Mexican entertainment company CIE have announced that they have signed a new five-year-deal to stage a Grand Prix from 2015 onwards.

‘Start your engines, F1 will return to Mexico next year.’ CIE president Alejandro Soberon said to the BBC.

It is thought that the Mexican Grand Prix will boost the schedule to 20 races next season with the return to Mexico scheduled around the United States Grand Prix in Texas making a North American double-header.
