Mercedes dominance at Ferrari’s home Grand Prix at Monza, on their 70th anniversary, left Ferrari president Sergio Marchionne embarrassed.

Four-time Formula One World Champion Sebastian Vettel arrived at Ferrari’s home track leading the championship race ahead of Mercedes pair of Lewis Hamilton and Valterri Bottas.

But even with Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen handing him a position, Vettel finished third over half a minute behind Hamilton who took the chequered flag.

This was also following a qualifying performance that saw Ferrari not only lose to both Mercedes, but also both Red Bull’s, a Williams and a Force India.

In fact Raikkonen’s time was 2.433seconds behind that of pole sitter Hamilton, with Vettel 0.077seconds further adrift.

‘It was almost embarrassing to see the difference between Mercedes and Ferrari. Marchionne told Sky Sports Italia after the race.

‘Mercedes were superior to Ferrari, we could not do anything.’

On the hope that the Singapore Grand Prix might provide a track more suitable for Ferrari he added: ‘It’s okay that the next circuits are more favourable, but it does not mean anything. We have to remove the smile from the face of these guys here, I’m flat out.’
