2014 Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton has been a target for Ferrari, but the British driver has refused to hold talks with the Maranello team.
The two-time Formula One World Champion is entering the final season of his contract with Mercedes, the third year of a deal he signed after opting to leave McLaren.
Fresh contract talks with Mercedes have been protracted, with Hamilton opting to delay talks last season to concentrate on challenging for the Formula One World Championship.
It is believed that during this period former Ferrari boss Marco Mattiacci made an approach for Hamilton, with Ferrari wanting the British driver to be paired with Sebastian Vettel following Kimi Raikkonen’s contract expiring at the end of 2015.
Reports in the Mirror newspaper suggested that Ferrari are willing to ‘make Hamilton the best paid driver in the sport’, offering him a deal worth close to £30million.
However it is thought that both Hamilton and Mercedes made a gentleman’s agreement that they would ‘not to speak to rivals until they have completed their own deliberations.’
More recently new Ferrari team principal Maurizio Arrivabene has also made reported approaches for Hamilton, but once again Hamilton has refused.
Instead he edges closer to a new Mercedes deal thought to be a two-year-deal for 2016 and 2017 with the option to extend into 2018.
