After a successful testing session in Jerez, Renault has confirmed that Nick Heidfeld will replace Robert Kubica while the Pole is recovery from his rally crash.

33-year-old Heidfeld had looked to be the forgotten man of Formula One for this season after losing his seat at Sauber following the announcement that Mexican Sergio Perez would join Kamui Kobayashi in the team.

‘I would have liked to come back to Formula 1 in different circumstances, but I’m proud to have been given this chance,’ Heidfeld said following the announcement.

‘I really enjoyed the test last week in Jerez and I’ve already settled in well with the guys at the track. I have a good feeling for the car, which is quite innovative.’

Heidfeld will certainly be thrown into the deep end with the move as he will now take part in Renault?s testing in Catalunya this weekend.

No time frame has been set for Kubica?s return; however medics think it is unlikely that he will recover in time to take part in the 2011 campaign.
