Is Nico Hulkenberg on the brink of leaving Force India and joining Renault?

The highly rated German driver, who at one time was being linked with a move to Ferrari could be lining up to join French manufacturer Renault for the 2017 season.

The former Le Mans winner has been confirmed by Renault F1 boss Fred Vasseur as one of the teams options for the new season.

It’s looking increasingly unlikely that neither Kevin Magnussen or Jolyon Palmer will remain with the team, with strong links indicating that Frenchman Esteban Ocon could well take the other race seat.

[Hulkenberg] is one of several options, but nothing is done yet,’ Vasseur told Canal Plus France as quoted by motorsport.com.

‘So many drivers are announced as joining us that if we had all of them, we’d rather have a football team than an F1 team!

‘Hulkenberg is an option, like another two or three.’

Hulkenberg actually has a contract in place with Force India for the 2017 Formula One World Championship season, but he also reportedly holds a get-out clause.

However Force India Deputy team principal Bob Fernley has told motorsport.com that neither Renault or Hulkenberg have approached Force India regarding his possible release.

‘We have had no approaches and nothing whatsoever. So as far as we are concerned sitting here today we have two drivers under contract.?
