Nico Hulkenberg has become the first active Formula One driver in 24 years to win the Le Mans 24 hour race.

The last active Formula One driver to win the Le Mans 24 hour race was British driver and now Sky Sports pundit Johnny Herbert in 1991.

The German driver switched his Force India, which had finished eighth at the Canadian Grand Prix, for a Porsche 919 Hybrid, teaming up with Nick Tandy and Earl Bamber.

After qualifying in third place, Hulkenberg ended the 24 hours in the Porsche crossing the line one lap ahead of team-mate Porsche team Mark Webber, Brendon Hartley and Timo Bernhard completing 8,469 miles.

Audi, who had won the race for five consecutive years finished third.

‘I’m speechless right now, to be honest.’ Hulkenberg said after the race.

‘Thank you so much everybody, great effort over the last few months.’
