The 2016 Formula One World Championship cannot be won this weekend at the United States Grand Prix.
Nico Rosberg holds a 33 point lead over Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton with four races of the season remaining.
It’s not quite a mathematical certainty, with a potential 100 points remaining for the three-time Formula One World Champion, but it is no longer in the British drivers hands.
Hamilton can no longer rely on the belief that he can beat Rosberg in the final four races and still clinch a fourth world championship, as Rosberg can happily see out the season in the knowledge that four second place finishes behind Hamilton will still be enough to claim his maiden title.
If Rosberg wins Austin on Sunday, he will hold a minimum of a forty point lead in the championship, with 3 races remaining.
Hamilton is not quite ready to concede his crown, but he’s already accepted that the title in 2016 is pretty unlikely.
‘You can’t win them all.
‘Look at all the world champions in the past who have won championships and lost championships, it’s part of the game. Hamilton told Sky Sports.
‘I am in the position right now where there are still a lot of points available so I’m going to give it everything I’ve got, and still have the belief that anything’s possible.
‘But then [if not] I’ll move on. Once it’s decided and it happens all I can do is shape the future, which is next year. So life would move on, we’d go into next season and hopefully come back stronger.’
