Pastor Maldonado has been handed a five-place grid penalty after deliberately driving into Lewis Hamilton at the end of Q2.

The Venezuelan deliberately drove into Hamilton’s McLaren on the exit to La Source after the second session of qualifying had ended.

Hamilton was slowing down ready to prepare for Q3, while Maldonado was out of qualifying having finished 16th. The Williams driver inexplicably drove at Hamilton damaging the McLaren’s front wing.

‘I haven’t spoken to him so I don’t know from his point of view what happened, but it is clear from the footage that we are going down a straight which curves to the right and he is far on the right and I am far on the left and I cannot go any more to the left, and somehow the car ends up hitting me right in front, so it is up to everyone else to come up with their own opinions about it, but I didn’t drive into anyone.’ Hamilton told Autosport Magazine.

The Williams driver appeared to have been angered by Hamilton overtaking him at the Bus Stop at the end of the lap. The British driver forced himself past Maldonado to set his fastest time of the session to scrape through to Q3. There was slight contact and Hamilton was reprimanded for the move.

  • Don’t think he’ll be there next season which will given another young driver the chance to break through to the exclusive club
