Following his announcement that he will be leaving Ferrari at the end of the 2013 season, Massa has confirmed that he has had contact with both Lotus and McLaren.

The Brazilian is looking for a new team in Formula One and has already spoken of his desire to continue at a competitive team where he can not only win races but also challenge for the Formula One World Drivers Championship.

Seats like that are extremely limited at the best of times and especially for next season.

Red Bull Racing have already confirmed their driver line-up with Sebastian Vettel being joined by Daniel Ricciardo who replaces the retiring Mark Webber.

Mercedes are set on current driver pairing Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton.

And at Ferrari, Fernando Alonso will be joined by Kimi Raikkonen, who will leave Lotus.

The Finn’s move from Lotus has opened up one seat and Lotus team principal Eric Boullier has publicly admitted that they are holding talks with a number of people.

The favourite had appeared to be Nico Hulkenberg, who had previously been in contention for the Ferrari seat.

His drive at Sauber looks increasingly unsettled with the team looking at pairing Russian youngster Sergey Sirotkin and Esteban Gutierrez together due to their individual connections with Sauber’s new Russian partners and Mexican sponsor Telmex.

But it seems Lotus are not set on Hulkenberg, with Massa very positive after his initial contact with the team.

‘We are negotiating, In my opinion the Lotus has a very competitive car, which is what I want. It is a team with a very important story in Brazil as well. Massa told Brazilian broadcaster Globo as quoted by Sky Sports.

‘We are having many conversations to try find a way for not only me but also Lotus to continue with a good car.’

Interestingly despite McLaren appearing to be set on keeping hold of both Jenson Button and Sergio Perez, McLaren have also held talks with Massa, the Brazilian adding: ‘I have had contact with McLaren. I can’t judge… it’s hard to say… with Lotus the contact has been very good,’
