Fernando Alonso finished sixth in his McLaren Honda at Sochi in last weekends Russian Grand Prix.

It was the two-time Formula One World Champions best finish since July 2015 at last seasons Hungarian Grand Prix and the best result for McLaren Honda since Jenson Button also crossed the chequered flag in sixth place at last seasons United States Grand Prix.

So, all in all, a very positive race for McLaren, but what can also be seen as another positive for the team is knowing where so much more performance can be found.

Whilst Alonso finished in sixth place, he finished almost 53 seconds behind the Williams Mercedes of fourth placed Valtteri Bottas.

That gap could be negated if McLaren can improve their fuel saving issues.

‘We can see that we are the team that have a lot of fuel saving for obvious reasons But with Fernando you could see towards the end of the race he was more than 1.2seconds faster [per lap].

‘So without fuel saving we’d save another 50seconds which we would’ve had at the end of the race.
McLaren Honda racing director Eric Boullier told Autosport Magazine.

‘If you look, we are with Williams [without fuel-saving] so it’s the kind of progress we need to go [further].

‘But that the pace was good and the drivers were happy with the car balance.

‘Fernando had some fun.’
