McLaren are said to be well prepared for the loss of $20million for 2016.

The McLaren team are far more used to competing at the front end of the grid alongside the likes of Ferrari and Williams and more recently Red Bull Racing and Mercedes.

But this season, after the long term move to partner Honda rather than be a customer of Mercedes they have spiralled down the grid and the Formula One constructors standings.

They are currently in ninth place, ahead of Manor Marussia, but 9 points behind Sauber, 24 points behind Toro Rosso, 33 behind Lotus and even 52 points behind fifth placed Force India.

That dramatic fall from grace will see them lose a large chunk of the prize fund which comes from Formula One Management.

There are very few teams who could absorb that kind of loss and McLaren are no exception, so for the team that has had no title sponsor since Vodafone ended their associate with the team in 2013 it’s time for new investment for McLaren.

‘we are working hard to improve our sponsorship portfolio and I cannot guarantee you 100 per cent, but 99.9 per cent there will be some announcements soon.’

‘So, we are working hard, we obviously have to find sponsors. If we are not finishing in the right ranking in the championship, we will lose some direct FOM moneys and we’ll have to find a way to replace it.’
McLaren’s Racing Director Eric Boullier told Sky Sports.
