The McLaren team are targeting their 150th pole position when the 2012 season resumes in China over the weekend of April 15th.

Unsurprisingly in a garage full of ego’s and competition both Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button will be hoping to secure this landmark for their team.

Since joining the team in 2007, Lewis Hamilton has taken 21 pole positions for the team, while after joining the team in 2010, Button is yet to place his McLaren at the front of the grid in qualifying.

But while the drivers will be hoping to get one over on the other on Saturday afternoon, Whitmarsh has kept one eye on the opposition and isn’t convinced it will be a straight shoot-out between the McLaren pairing.

‘A 150th pole for the team would be a great result but a lot of things can happen before then,’ McLaren Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh told Sky Sports.

‘China comes after a three-week gap and all of the teams will be pressing to improve their cars, including ourselves, and it’s as simple as that: if someone has improved their car more than us then they could come out of the box even quicker than us in China.’
