When it comes to following F1 I’ve always supported my favourite driver, 99% based on them bring British but also a drivers style.

So it won’t come as a surprise I’m a Hamilton fan.

When it comes to Touring Cars and Sports Cars I’m an Audi fan for various reasons, so throw McNish behind the wheel and he automatically becomes the driver I’m cheering on at Le Mans and various other places.

So I’m fairly unbiased in this, but once again McNish’s decisions as race steward were pretty harsh towards Hamilton.

Even David Coulthard taking his devils advocate role usually believes Hamilton should be investigated by the stewards for getting out of bed, but on this occasion during the race he thought it was ‘marginal’ that this incident should be referred to the stewards.

Overall both Brundle and Coulthard thought there was no case to answer too during the race.

Some common sense in incidents like this would be nice, like Nigel Mansell showed at Silverstone, whilst McNish seems to be like an overzealous Premier League referee who applies the letter of the law from a rule book no matter the circumstances.

Yes technically trying to recover the car was dangerous, but so is staying side on in the middle of a slippery track. It’s certainly not somewhere that I would like to have stayed still!

Paul di Resta was the only driver who had to take avoiding action, putting his back wheel on to the grass in the process. He himself said that he had plenty of time to react which would suggest it was safe…admittedly his manager is Lewis Hamilton’s Dad so not a completely unbiased view, but I don’t think it would be an outright lie!

So another harsh decision from McNish to add to the incidents at Monaco between Hamilton and Massa and Hamilton and Maldonado.

On those incidents Hamilton was the aggressor, so I can see why those decisions were made, although other drivers like Schumacher managed to race hard and fair and actually give room to the driver behind and avoid a collision, but why do these incidents even have to be reviewed. It’s motor racing and racing incidents occur.

Other drivers make contact and do not get punished, Button colliding with Alonso in Canada is just one example, Alonso had to retire, Button went on to win the race!

It just would be nice to get some consistency (and perhaps not invite McNish back!)

  • Nice article. I can’t believe some of the decisions that go against Lewis. It’s like he’s racing under a whole different set of rules.
