Nigel Stepney, who had been involved in motor racing of one description or another from the late 1970s, has been tragically killed in an accident.
The 56-year-old was involved in a fatal road accident on Friday.
British born Stepney, first started working in F1 in the late 70s, for first Shadow then Lotus and Benetton, working with the late great Ayrton Senna. He arguably became most famous with him time at Ferrari from 1992 onwards with him a key player in the team during the dominance of Michael Schumacher.
Stepney was eventually sacked by Ferrari in July 2007 as part of the ‘Spygate’ controversy, with it claimed that he passed on confidential documents to McLaren, as that previously great relationship with Ferrari turned sour he was also accused of ‘sabotaging’ cards at Monaco.
These things aside Stepney has been a great servant to motor racing and had done a lot for F1 with the tributes pouring in for him following his death, with the thoughts of all at Vital F1 with his family at this sad time.
