Reigning and defender three-time Formula One World Champion Sebastian Vettel cannot wait to start defending his crown.

But the German doesn’t believe that anyone on the grid quite knows where they stand and won’t do until the action of qualifying and racing begins in Australia over the weekend.

‘I’m especially happy to start this year because we want to find out where we are, I think we have no idea at this stage – and I don’t believe there is anybody who really has an idea, so it’s good to finally find out.’ Vettel told Autosport Magazine.

The winter testing programme in Jerez and Barcelona failed to really show anything in regards to who could be in contention in 2013.

With every team and every driving running through different set-ups and different testing programmes at different times of the day, no comparisons can really be drawn.

Both the Mercedes and the Lotus looked quick, while Ferrari, McLaren and of course Red Bull are expected to have all come into the new season in competitive shape.

Vettel however did suggest that perhaps Red Bull come into the race a little bit behind in regards to testing, but believes they will have made forward steps in their development.

‘We did a lot of work back at the factory and we’ve arrived with what we think is best, Tomorrow we’ll find out if we have gone in the right direction.

‘It’s clear where we want to be. We know that it’s going to be difficult as it will be very tight.

‘But at this stage we don’t really know where we are because we don’t know where the others are.’
