Following hours of speculation this afternoon the news as we expected is that the 2011 Formula One curtain raiser in Bahrain will not be going ahead as scheduled.

The new F1 season will now get under way in Australia over the weekend of the 25th and 27th March.

The final test session of the season which was set to be in Bahrain on March 3rd is likely to now be at Barcelona, the teams are already at the track finishing four days of testing and for logistical reasons it’s just easier to stay put.

It is uncertain whether F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone will try to organise another date for the Bahrain Grand Prix later in the year, or whether it will simply be dropped from the 2011 calender.
