Perez Fully Backed

The driving style of Sergio Perez has come in for some criticism, in fact it was said by Kimi Raikkonen that Perez should be ?punched in the face? for his attempted overtaking manoeuvre at Monaco!

Sam Michael, McLaren’s sporting director, has thrown his support behind the Brazilian as he feels he’s not doing anything that hasn’t been done before. He said: ‘We are fully behind him. Ultimately he is racing driver and he is just racing.

‘All the moves that he has done are all moves that have been done by all of the drivers in various points of their career – some recently and some long ago. The overtaking opportunities that were available at the chicane in Monaco are ones that have been used since before Perez was even born.

‘Ultimately he is racing for his position, he is establishing himself and that is Formula 1.’

Racing drivers are meant to race, right? They attempt to overtake people so as long as Perez isn’t trying anything too dangerous, that hasn’t been part of the sport for donkies years then let him got on with it!

Perez had a successful season with Sauber last time round and managed three podium finishes, however the transition with McLaren hasn’t been as easy for him with three top ten finishes from his races so far and a sixth place his best.

Michael added that he felt that the 23-year-old was adapting to his new team though and is pleased, especially when compared to former World Champion, teammate and vastly more experienced Jensen Button, with how things are developing for Perez and will continue to be happy if they carry on moving forward.
