In typical Bernie Ecclestone style, a fresh new deal with Pirelli was announced on the grid in Russia.
During Sky Sports commentator Martin Brundle’s grid walk, the former British driver stopped Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone who was with Pirelli chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera.
Brundle asked if his attendance signified a new deal and the 84-year-old offered a handshake to Provera.
‘We have a plan to develop larger tyres. We have to agree with FOM and the FIA what to do, but we have plans. We are ready to do anything.’ he told Sky Sports.
The full details are yet to be ironed out, Pirelli are aiming to get a lot more testing time agreed as they could be asked to develop new tyres.
Pirelli chief Paul Hembery said: ‘A commercial agreement has been found with FOM, There is still the formal process to go through with the World Council but we have been approved technically by the FIA and that is the first phase of the tender process.
‘There will be a bit of contract writing to do, which will keep the lawyers busy for a little while, and then we have another four years in front of us.’
The Italian tyre manufacturer have been Formula One’s official tyre supplier since 2011.
