Pirelli have completed their post-mortem on just what contributed to the farcical and dangerous scenes we witnessed at the British Grand Prix.

The Italian tyre manufacturer announced that a series of contributing factors led to the tyre blowouts, that saw four high speed incidents during the race including to Lewis Hamilton, who was leading the race at his home Grand Prix at the time.

Pirelli were quick to state that the 2013 tyres were safe and that the 2013 tyres ‘does not compromise driver safety in any way if used in the correct manner’.

The official statement partly blamed the Silverstone track, quoting ‘high kerbs’ as an issue, while also pointed the finger at the Formula One teams for mounting the rear tyres the wrong way around, running low tyre pressures, using extreme cambers and the angle at which the wheel is mounted on the suspension.

Pirelli stated that all rear tyre failures occurred on cars that had mounted the tyres the wrong way round a practice that had been common this season and was not illegal.

Pirelli admitted that they had underestimated the effect it could have.

A second statement released by Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery just hours later however clarified that: ‘In no way are we intending to create arguments or attack anybody. We have taken our responsibilities upon ourselves.

‘But not having full control over all the elements that impact on the use of the tyres, we need everybody’s contribution. With regard to this, we are receiving the full support of all the parties involved, for which we are very grateful.’


In response Pirelli will introduce modified tyres for this weekend’s German Grand Prix with Kevlar-belt tyres [previously used in 2012] replacing the steel versions used this season.

This was a change that Pirelli had wanted to make prior to the British Grand Prix after testing them in Canada, but Pirelli failed to receive the unanimous backing of the Formula One teams to do it.

Changes to the regulations by the FIA in the wake of the Silverstone race has meant that Pirelli can now make the change and a new range of tyres will also be developed in time for the Hungarian Grand Prix in a few weeks time.

Kevlar will be used as the belt where the rubber is mounted, it is designed to be more puncture resistant, but the concern for some teams is that it will make the tyres run about 10c cooler than before, which of course will mean a change in tyre performance.

In a season dominated by tyre performance that could see a shift in cars performance with the changes helping some teams and hindering those that did have a grip on the current tyres.
