Red Bull have once again defended the legality of their front wing following disgruntled comments being made around the Formula One paddock.

The Red Bull front wing was accused of being illegal by other teams last season, with an FIA investigation later approving the wing and once again this season, despite the wing passing all the required tests, more complaints have been made.

Despite the front wing passing all the required tests, comments around the paddock suggest that some teams believe the Red Bull wing does flex around the track, gaining an aerodynamic advantage of over half a second per lap.

The issue is whether or not this flexing then means that the front wing no longer meets the required minimum height set out by the Formula One regulations.

The tests are done in the pit lane and the talk in the paddock is that the Red Bull design, somehow cheats the system, not that a F1 team would ever put it in such blunt terms.

‘Shall I explain in very basic words how it works?’ a defiant Christian Horner, Red Bull’s team boss said to the BBC.

‘We run quite a high rake angle in our car. So inevitably when the rear of the car is higher, the front of the car is going to be lower to the ground.

‘It is obvious science, and therefore our wing complies fully with the regulations. It will look lower to the ground because the rake in the car is higher, but it is simple mathematics.’

‘I think our front wing has been tested more than any other in the pit lane, and it complies with the regulations, which is what we have to do. We don’t have to pass a McLaren test, we have to pass an FIA one, and it complies fully with that.’


The last comment perhaps suggests that Horner is getting tired of the accusations coming from rivals McLaren, but if the wing is legal why the need to get frustrated?
