Red Bull is the official works team of Renault

Dr Helmut Marko the advisor to the Red Bull Racing Formula One Team is confident that his team will enjoy a better 2015.

After dominating Formula One in recent years claiming four consecutive driver and constructors world championships, Red Bull Racing have struggled this season.

Daniel Ricciardo may have won three Grand Prix since stepping up through the young driver programme from Toro Rosso, but performance wise Red Bull have been well adrift of the all-conquering Mercedes AMG cars.

That has been put down to the new engine regulations in Formula One and principally the advantage that Mercedes powered cars have enjoyed over Renault powered teams.

Marko believes part of the problem for Renault since the switch to hybrid turbo engines has been the way in which Renault went about designing their power-trains.

Both Mercedes and Ferrari designed one power-unit with the teams working around that design, Renault tried to be more user friendly and designed four different adaptations for customers Red Bull, Lotus, Toro Rosso and Caterham.

But that is all set to change for next season with Renault now set to work closer with Red Bull Racing.

‘For many years we?ve been a customer team for them [Renault] like all the others and it?s only our success that has made us move closer together – under such conditions Lotus was, for a long time, the secret darling of Renault. That has only changed very recently. What followed was the announcement that Red Bull is the official works team of Renault. Marko told formula1.com

‘In times where the power unit is key to success you have to focus on the most promising option. Remember: this season we had four different engine adaptions for the chassis. Next season there will only be one – the one that Red Bull Racing is creating with Renault – and the others have to take it one-to-one. That is the most efficient solution. Mercedes is proving that model very successfully – they only have one power unit version and the same goes for Ferrari.

‘We are right now in the process of strengthening the technical cooperation to race at eye level with Mercedes in 2015. he added.
