Nico Rosberg does not believe that Valtteri Bottas was the best choice to replace him at Mercedes.

Rosberg announced his immediate retirement from Formula One just days after clinching the 2016 Formula One World Championship.

The decision threw the Mercedes team into chaos, just how do they find a replacement to the current world champion when all the other teams have already completed their driver line-ups for 2017?

There was whispers that Sebastian Vettel could leave Ferrari a season early, or that Fernando Alonso could get out of his contract at McLaren Honda.

But in the end, Mercedes plumped for a short-term fix of Valterri Bottas from Williams.

Rosberg however believes that Mercedes should have signed up Fernando Alonso, as the Spaniard would have clashed with Hamilton.

?OK, because I’m now a fan, and on that side of the fence, it’s very easy to respond, Everyone says Alonso and I say it too, because there would be fireworks with Hamilton [he laughs]. Rosberg told Spanish newspaper Marca as quoted by motorsport.com.

Rosberg however conceded: ?As a fan, it would be nice, but for the team, it wouldn’t work. They’ve found a great solution.

?Bottas is fast and though Hamilton will be at a very, very high level and it will be difficult to beat him, I have proved that he can.?

He even backed the Finn to beat his former team-mate in Australia: ?I have him on pole in the first race in Australia!?
