Paul Di Resta started his Formula 1 career by winning a point for Force India in today’s Australian Grand Prix.

The young Scot qualified 14th, two places ahead of teammate Adrian Sutil, and together they initially finished 12th and 13th respectively, but they both gained 2 places as Sauber duo – rookie Sergio Perez and Kamui Kobayashi were both disqualified for a technical infringement.

Di Resta delivered a calm and confident performance throughout the whole weekend that his team I’m sure would have been proud of. At one stage during the race, he was even chasing the back of Jenson Button’s car.

Sauber say they will appeal the disqualification decision, but in the meantime Di Resta says 10th is a ‘mega result’:

‘If the news is true [about Sauber’s disqualification], then this is a mega result for me and Force India,’

‘It is exactly what we set out to achieve and I am delighted to have scored ny first point.

‘It [the race] was quite good. I made a reasonable start, was up to 10th at one stage, and was quicker than [Kamui] Kobayashi at the beginning, but he went a bit defensive and was too extreme with his blocking.

The important thing was for me to get round and finish my first race and I wasn’t too far away from Adrian at the end. That’s the first one out of the way and we were definitely more competitive than we thought we would be, coming into this one. We have raced better than we thought, so there are definitely positives we can take.

Now, we just have to get through the next couple of races before we see the new stuff and the new theory we have behind the upgrades when we hope to see a reasonable gain [in the future].’

  • Sorry to be negative about thé ‘back row’ but there are teams and drivers that are only there because of sponsership or govermental money so not lets get to excited about thé odd point that these teams get thru thé season. Theyre only there to make up thé numbers and add to bernies fortune……

  • Force India should be challenging for a few points in each race, or at least aiming for points in every race. Hispania couldn’t even race as they were so slow.
