Sauber are in need of some engines for the 2014 Formula One season and beyond.

The Sauber team have been powered by Ferrari since 2010 following BMW’s decision to withdraw from the sport.

Their current contract with Ferrari runs until the end of the 2013 F1 season, but they are hoping that they can put a new agreement in place with Ferrari.

‘There is nothing in place, [but] it is a logical step for us to first go and talk to our current engine partner, because we do have a long history together, Sauber CEO Monisha Kaltenborn told Sky Sports.

One of the problems that is clouding the issue are the changes in engine regulations for F1 from 2014.

From 2014 Formula One teams will run with 1.6-litre V6 engines.

This is a change from the current 2.4-litre V8s that teams are running this season and an alteration to the previously proposed 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo units which Ferrari, Mercedes and Cosworth all objected to in 2011.

It is thought that engineer manufacturers will be restricted to only acting as suppliers to three teams [including their own], with Mercedes, Ferrari and Renault the only engine manufacturers likely to remain in F1 in 2014 there is some uncertainty in the paddock at the moment.

She continued: ‘all is open because I don’t think they [Ferrari] themselves know about certain conditions. We have to wait.

With the uncertainty over the engine regulations Sauber have held talks with other possible engine suppliers.

One option could have been PURE a new company headed by Former BAR team principal Craig Pollock with Jean-Pierre Boudy formerly of Peugeot and former Renault F1 managing director Christian Contzen and aerospace expert Robin Southwell all being involved during the development process.

PURE have been working on the development of their new customer engines for since 2010 but their development came to a halt recently due to financial reasons.

German manufacturer Volkswagen had also been linked with a move from Rallying to Formula One and during that period they held talks with Sauber.

But whilst Kaltenborn was happy to confirm that talks were held, she also revealed that there would not be any further discussions, following reports that VW have decided against making a move into Formula One as an engine supplier: ‘We were asked about a meeting, and we confirmed it took place in Geneva, and that is it, there is nothing further to say. There are no further talks,’

‘If we want to increase our competitiveness, it is one of our targets to have a strong partner, and the strength of the partner matters. (But) we are definitely not talking to them (VW) now.’
