Double Formula One World Champion Fernando Alonso has praised title rival Sebastian Vettel for his performances this season.
The Red Bull driver looks in prime position to claim a fourth consecutive Formula One World Championship, leading the standings by 36 points over the Spaniard.
Vettel has pulled out the lead over the past couple of races in Monaco and Canada with a second place finish in Monte Carlo and the race victory in Montreal.
‘[Vettel is] doing a fantastic job, all the races he has been nearly perfect with no down races, always performing well in qualifying and doing very good races,’ Alonso told Sky Sports.
‘Obviously I had two unlucky situations, one in Malaysia, one in Bahrain. Kimi was leading the championship, or very close, until he had two unlucky situations, one in Monaco and Canada was a little bit of a mixed race for him.
‘So we need to keep fighting, pushing and recover now these bad races that we had. Red Bull is performing really well and is improving compared to the first part of the championship so we really need to raise our game to Sebastian because he’s doing a fantastic job.’
In recent seasons consistency has proven key in the race to win the title.
Sebastian Vettel is yet to finish lower than fourth place this season, with three victories, one second place, one third and two fourth place finishes.
Whilst Fernando Alonso has one two races, finished second twice, with a seventh, eighth and a DNF weighing down his average points haul.
For Raikkonen he has one race victory, three second place finishes and then a seventh, a ninth and a tenth place finish to his name.
