Fernando Alonso knows all too well that his F2012 is not at the same level as the McLaren, Red Bull, Lotus and at times even the Sauber. He is aware that luck has been on his side at times when weather and rain helped him snag more points than his rivals.

Alonso has been hailed as one of the best drivers on the grid by many of the drivers, team bosses and media. We have all seen him take points and even win races in a car that has been inferior but improving.

Ferrari’s star knows he needs to qualify as best as possible to stay out of the way of traffic going into the first turn in Singapore. He will have to try at all costs to avoid a collision that could jeopardize his chances of scoring points.

Wins are important in this stage of the game as they offer maximum points. The daftly clever and highly skilled Spaniard however, knows that solid points are enough to stay ahead as rivals behind him take points away from each other.

37 points ahead of his nearest challenger seems like a rather large gap, however, as we have seen, failure to finish a race can quickly change the look of the driver’s championship table. Having said that however, 37 points to the good is far better than being on the other side of that equation.

Alonso will be looking to add to his successful Singapore story where he has had two victories and a 3rd and 4th place finish. One of his victories was marred by controversy (2008) which I’m sure is added motivation for him to perform well.

A clean and steady race with good points is what Alonso is looking for with a race victory as a welcome bonus from here to the end of the season.
