Will Brawn switch from Mercedes back to Ferrari?

With Ross Brawn’s perhaps imminent departure from Mercedes as the main talking point over the past couple of months, questions were always going to be asked in Brazil.

Would this be the last time we see Brawn as a team principal in Formula One?

Just where will he go if he does decide to leave Mercedes?

And where will he go too if he does remain in F1?

The easy connection has been to link him up with McLaren due to the partnership with Honda set to commence for the 2015.

But when Honda withdrew from Formula One, leaving Brawn to buy-out the team [which evolved into Mercedes], apparently Brawn and Honda didn’t depart on good terms.

That said, Kimi Raikkonen didn’t depart Ferrari on good terms either and yet they’re reconciling their differences for next season, so you can never say never in Formula One.

Another option could be Williams, with the rumour mill already linking Brawn with a buy-out of Toto Wolff shares in the team.

But in Brazil a further, tantalising option appeared to materialise. Could Ross Brawn return to Ferrari?

In Brazil Ross Brawn was seen having a meeting in the Ferrari motor home with Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali. Not an unusual sight in Formula One, but at the final race of the season when it’s widely thought that Brawn is leaving his current team? Just what could they be discussing?

Immediately rumours began to circulate, but the question remained, if Brawn was going to move to Ferrari what would happen to Domenicali?

He would hardly talk to someone set to replace him? Would he?

Well the answer to that question was simple: ‘If I see that is the best solution I will do it even tomorrow, 100 per cent.

‘My interest is to make sure that Ferrari will win again Domenicali told Sky Sports when asked if he would step aside for a new team principal at Ferrari.

‘Also I have bosses on top of me that may take that decision, it will be no problem because at the end of the day what is the most important thing is that Ferrari has to become once again the standard for Formula 1.’

So while the interview answered no questions, it certainly leaves the door open for Ross Brawn to return to the team where he won numerous titles between 1997 and 2006.

It makes a lot of sense, but while all the media and experts firmly believe Brawn will leave Mercedes at the end of the season, Brawn himself was not giving anything away.
